The role of a Spectator Safety Steward often goes unnoticed but is crucial for the smooth functioning of any large-scale event. Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Geoff Thomas, an industry veteran with over 15 years of experience in the field and an alumni member of NGTC. Geoff has worked at some of the biggest venues across the country and specialises in spectator safety.
Finding the Passion for Safety
NGTC Interviewer: Geoff, it’s a pleasure to have you with us today. Could you tell us how you got into the role of a Spectator Safety Steward?
Geoff: Thank you for having me. Well, I’ve always been a sports enthusiast, and my love for football led me to start working part-time at stadiums when I was in college. Over time, I realised that being a steward allows me to contribute to the event’s success, ensuring everyone has a good time in a safe environment. The rest, as they say, is history.
Daily Challenges and Rewards
NGTC Interviewer: What does a typical day look like for you?
Geoff: No two days are the same, to be honest. Pre-event, we have briefings and team meetings to discuss the event specifics, emergency plans, and positioning. During the event, it’s all hands on deck. We manage crowd flow, answer queries, and ensure all safety measures are in place. Post-event, we assist with the safe departure of spectators and have a debrief session to discuss any issues that may have arisen.
A Culture of Teamwork
NGTC Interviewer: How would you describe your relationship with your team members?
Geoff: Teamwork is at the core of our job. In this role, you need to trust that your team members have your back. We share experiences, tips, and on-the-spot advice, which I believe is crucial for professional growth. It’s very much a mutual learning environment.
Crisis Management
NGTC Interviewer: Could you share an example of a challenging situation you’ve faced?
Geoff: Certainly. There was an instance where we had a medical emergency in the stands. A spectator collapsed, and quick action was needed. We have trained medical personnel on standby, but getting them to the right location through a packed crowd required precision. I led a team that created a quick path for the medical staff and managed the situation without causing panic among other spectators. It was nerve-wracking but also highlighted the importance of our roles.
Continuous Learning
NGTC Interviewer: What kind of training have you undergone for this role?
Geoff: Beyond the basic qualifications, I’ve completed specialised courses in crowd management, emergency response, and conflict resolution. But, I must say, much of the real learning happens on the job, especially during high-stress situations.
Vision for the Future
NGTC Interviewer: Where do you see the industry heading, especially regarding spectator safety?
Geoff: With the increasing focus on public safety and heightened security concerns, I see a growing demand for skilled professionals in our field. Technology is also playing a significant role. For example, digital surveillance and crowd analytics are becoming indispensable tools for event management.
Words of Wisdom
NGTC Interviewer: Finally, what advice would you offer to someone interested in pursuing a career as a Spectator Safety Steward?
Geoff: I’d say go for it if you have a genuine interest in people and public safety. The job is demanding, yes, but also incredibly rewarding. Be prepared for a life of continuous learning and know that every day, you’re making a positive impact on people’s experiences.
