Shambolic Execution of Event Organisation
UEFA had a clear plan for the movement of supporters throughout the day, using shuttle buses to ensure a smooth transition from airport arrivals to the stadium. However, the execution appeared to be far from flawless. Some supporters were reported to left waiting for up to three hours for these shuttle buses in the midday Istanbul sun. These buses were overcrowded, with poor air conditioning and no available toilets, causing significant discomfort for the fans. The journey to the stadium, initially estimated to take an hour, stretched up to 2.5 hours, much to the dismay of the fans.
The fan park, intended to entertain and cater to the fans before the match, appeared to be ill-equipped to handle the size of the event and travelling fans. Limited food choices with long waiting times, inadequate toilet facilities, and insufficient seating for the less able were some of the issues faced by the fans. In one outrageous incident, it’s alleged a supporter was inside a mobile toilet when it was driven away without warning.
Catering Staff Scams and Other Safety Concerns
There are reports regarding the behaviour of catering staff with some staff alleged to have demanded tips from fans waiting to be served. In the absence of UEFA personnel, safety stewards, or police to oversee their behaviour, these staff members allegedly continued with their inappropriate demands.
Once inside the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, supporters were served by only one bar, forcing them to queue for up to 45 minutes for a bottle of water. The stadium design doesn’t appear to be suitable with many fans reporting injuries from the sharp edges around the rim of low-lying seating led to injuries to the lower legs, again demonstrating a clear lack of consideration for spectator safety in the seating design.
Post-Match Chaos: A Serious Safety Concern
The post-match chaos was perhaps the most serious safety and safeguarding concern. Unstable rubble walkways, lack of lighting, and absence of UEFA personnel or staff members caused confusion and distress among supporters trying to make their way back to the shuttle buses. its been alleged that a supporter pushing a wheelchair had to struggle on his own to reach a shuttle bus.

It is evident that a robust spectator safety and welfare plan needs to be put into action. Ensuring adequate transport facilities, equipping fan parks with sufficient amenities, and maintaining ethical conduct among all staff members are some of the crucial areas to focus on. Perhaps most importantly, a dedicated and well-qualified security team.
