Empowering Wigan’s Young People: Security & Events Training Course Opens Doors to New Opportunities

A group of ambitious young people from Wigan have taken a significant step towards careers in the security and events industry, thanks to a unique training course funded by Wigan Council through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). Designed exclusively for young residents of Wigan, the programme provided an invaluable introduction to spectator safety, equipping learners with industry-recognized qualifications and real-world experience.

The course, delivered on a part-time basis, focused on regulated qualifications in spectator safety, offering participants a practical and theoretical foundation in event security. Learners explored key aspects of crowd management, event safety procedures, and emergency protocols, preparing them for future roles in the sector.

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Event Safety

The highlight of the course was a workplace safari at Leigh Sports Village, where candidates were given exclusive access to experience the inner workings of a live event safety operation. Participants attended pre-event briefings, observed pitch-side security operations, met senior safety management personnel, and gained rare insight into the control room—where critical decisions ensure the safety of thousands of spectators.

This hands-on experience was instrumental in bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, allowing learners to witness the fast-paced, high-responsibility nature of event safety roles.

Investing in the Future Workforce of Wigan

This initiative is part of a broader effort to support young people across the Wigan Borough, ensuring they have access to quality training and career pathways. Wigan Council’s backing, facilitated through the UKSPF, underscores the commitment to upskilling local talent and creating sustainable employment opportunities in the region.

As a direct result of the training, candidates can now progress onto further regulated qualifications and will be guaranteed interviews with partnering employers to start applying their skills in real-world settings. This unique offering is more than just a course—it’s a stepping stone to long-term employment and career growth within the security and events sector.

A Bright Future Ahead

The success of this programme demonstrates the value of investing in young people and providing them with the tools to thrive in growing industries. By equipping learners with the necessary skills, qualifications, and industry exposure, Wigan Council and UKSPF are playing a vital role in shaping a skilled and confident workforce.

We are incredibly proud of our learners and look forward to seeing their continued success as they embark on their careers in event safety and security.
