The narrative around women in the security sector is rapidly changing, and exemplary professionals like Abi Brookes are at the forefront of this transformation. Abi is not only an experienced door supervisor but also a mother of two young children.
Our team connected with Abi after she was student on one of our courses. In her own words:
“It’s invigorating to be part of a field that’s predominantly male-dominated. In my decade-long experience, I’ve felt nothing but inclusion. Diversity, whether in terms of gender, sexual orientation, or race, only strengthens a team. A strong team transcends all differences.”
Intrigued by Abi’s perspective, we decided to feature her insights in our special series #WomenInSecurity.
An Unconventional Entry into Security
Abi, it’s wonderful to have you here. Could you share how you transitioned into security work?
“I used to be a nursing assistant before I met my partner, who worked as a security officer in a nightclub. I started out as a bartender there but soon realised my true calling was in security. I completed the required training and earned my stripes as a door supervisor.“
A Multifaceted Role in Security
You’re not just supervising doors at nightclubs now, are you?
“Indeed, I do much more. My partner and I co-manage a security staffing firm. My role allows me a holistic view of the industry. I know what attributes to seek in candidates and also understand the demands and expectations of a security role, regardless of one’s gender.”
Striking a Work-Life Balance
You must have a busy schedule. How do you manage?
“My passion for my work fuels me. Besides, I have two young kids who infuse my life with positive energy. The camaraderie among my colleagues makes each day at work feel like a team huddle. We’re always there for one another.”
Gender Representation in the Field
What’s the gender ratio like at your workplace?
“Out of our team of seven security officers, I’m proud to say we have a good female representation. It’s an encouraging sign for the industry.”
Team Dynamics and Gender Perceptions
How do your male colleagues perceive you?
“Respect is universal on our team. Our roles are defined not by our genders but by our competencies. I advocate for more women to join this field with confidence.”
A Glimpse into a Typical Night
Can you walk us through your average shift?
“My shift typically starts between 9:30 and 10:30 pm, allowing me to be with my children during their bedtime and mornings. Each shift starts with a team briefing to discuss roles, positioning, and safety protocols like ensuring everyone has a radio for communication.”
Challenges of the Job
Is it a strenuous job?
“Every venue has its challenges. Nightclubs are particularly dynamic environments, and we’re trained to manage volatile situations that often arise. While physical risks are part and parcel of the job, the backup from my team is always a radio call away.”
Training and Skill Development
Where did you acquire your skills?
“My initial training was more regulatory. Real skill-building came from on-the-job experience and observing my experienced colleagues. Advanced training programs during my license renewal were particularly beneficial.”
Advice for Aspiring Female Security Professionals
Any tips for women considering this career path?
“Be confident and learn to quickly assess situations. Most importantly, work within a supportive team that has your back.”
Abi’s journey serves as an inspiration for women looking to break into or advance within the private security sector. The future appears promising as more women like Abi continue to contribute their unique skills and perspectives.
