FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Who needs to take this refresher qualification?
If you are renewing a Security Officer licence, you must complete refresher training that includes updated content on terrorism awareness, vulnerability, and searching. This ensures your knowledge reflects current security threats and best practice in the industry.

How often do I need to refresh my training?
You must complete the SIA refresher training each time you renew your Security Officer licence. Licences are valid for three years, so refresher training is required every three years to keep your skills and understanding current.

How long does it take for my results to appear on my SIA account?
Once you successfully complete the course, your results are uploaded by the awarding body to the SIA online system. This usually takes up to 10 working days from your final assessment. You can then apply to renew your licence via your SIA account — please allow this time when choosing your course date.

Can I complete the refresher training before my current SIA licence expires?
Yes. You can complete your refresher training at any point within the final 12 months of your current licence. Many officers complete it early to avoid any break in licence validity — we recommend completing your training ahead of time to ensure continuity of employment.

What topics does the refresher training cover?
The course covers:

  • Terrorism threat awareness (via ACT Awareness and ACT Security e-learning)

  • Vulnerability awareness – safeguarding and supporting vulnerable people

  • Search procedures – theory and practical demonstration

  • Use of communication devices – practical application

No physical intervention element is required for Security Officers.

What First Aid certification is required?
To attend the course, you must hold a valid Emergency First Aid at Work (or higher) qualification that will remain valid for at least 12 months from your course start date. If you do not hold this, it can be added to your booking for an additional £50.

What do I need to complete before attending the classroom session?
Before attending, you must complete:

  • Self-study modules through the NewGen Virtual Learning Environment

  • ACT Awareness and ACT Security e-learning modules

  • Online learning covering searching and vulnerability topics
You must also present your valid First Aid certificate at registration.

Why is refresher training required?
The SIA introduced refresher training to make sure all licence holders maintain the standards expected in today’s security industry. It helps ensure officers remain competent, confident, and able to respond effectively to emerging threats and safeguarding responsibilities.
