FRequently asked questions

Who needs to take this refresher qualification?
If you are renewing a Door Supervisor or Security Guard licence, you must complete refresher training that includes updated content on terrorism awareness, vulnerability, searching and physical intervention.

How often do I need to refresh my training?
You must complete the SIA refresher training each time you renew your Door Supervisor licence. Licences are valid for three years, so refresher training is required every three years to maintain your licence and ensure your knowledge and skills remain up to date.

How long does it take for my results to appear on my SIA account?
Once you successfully complete the course, your results are uploaded by the awarding body to the SIA online system. This normally takes up to 10 working days from your final assessment. You can then proceed to renew your licence via your SIA online account – please allow this time when considering a course date for booking

Can I complete the refresher training before my current SIA licence expires?
Yes. You can complete your refresher training any time within the last 12 months of your current licence period. Many operatives choose to refresh a few months before expiry to avoid any break in their licence validity – we recommend you get ahead and do it early to avoid any loss in continuity of your license.

What topics does the refresher training cover?
The training covers: terrorism threat awareness (via ACT modules), vulnerability awareness (e.g., spiking, vulnerable persons), searching procedures, plus physical intervention knowledge and practical assessment.

What First Aid certification is required?
For Door Supervisors or Security Guard licence renewals you must hold a valid Emergency First Aid at Work (or equivalent) certificate that will remain valid for at least 12 months from the start date of your training. If you do not hold this, it can be added to your booking for an additional £50.

What do I need to complete before attending the classroom session?
Prior to classroom attendance you will need to complete self-study modules through your NewGen virtual learning environment, including the official ACT Awareness and ACT Security e-learning, plus online reading on searching, vulnerability and physical intervention theory. You must also hold a valid First Aid qualification.

Why is refresher training required?
The regulator (SIA) requires refresher training because skills can degrade over time and threats evolve. The training ensures you remain competent and up to date.
