Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is for individuals who need to renew their Close Protection SIA licence.

It has been introduced to meet the latest licence-linked training requirements set by the Security Industry Authority (SIA). Successfully completing this qualification will enable you to apply to renew your Close Protection licence and continue working legally under the Private Security Industry Act (2001).

This refresher qualification ensures operatives remain competent in:

  • Physical intervention skills

  • Threat awareness and protective security

  • Safe and lawful working practices

  • Public safety and professional standards

Qualification structure

To achieve the qualification learners must achieve 4 Units

  • Unit 1: Principles of Working as a Door Supervisor in the Private Security Industry (Refresher)
    55 Minute Exam – 35 Questions (71% Pass Mark) | Practical Assessment – Communication & Search Procedures
  • Unit 2: Application of Physical Intervention Skills in the Private Security Industry (Refresher)
    45 Minute Exam – 30 Questions (80% Pass Mark) | Practical Assessment – Physical Intervention Skills & Professional Discussion
  • Unit 3: Application of Physical Intervention Skills for Close Protection Operatives (Refresher)
    30 Minutes Exam – 20 Questions (80% Pass Mark) | Practical Assessment – Physical Intervention Skills

In order to complete the full qualification you will be required to undertake multiple practical scenario assessments at one of our training centres and outreach locations nearby.

Entry Requirements

To enrol on this course, learners must:

  • Be aged 18 or over

  • Hold a valid Close Protection SIA licence or be eligible for renewal

  • Hold a valid First Aid qualification (Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work or equivalent) valid for at least 12 months from the course start date

  • Be able to provide valid identification in line with SIA requirements

  • Have English language skills sufficient to complete the training and assessments

  • Complete any required pre-course self-study

If you do not hold a valid First Aid certificate, we can provide a 1-day Emergency First Aid at Work refresher course prior to your Close Protection refresher training.

What does the Typical course structure look like?

Pre-Course – Online – Self-Study Materials Issued prior to course start

Day 1 – Classroom – First Aid Refresher (if Required)

Day 2 – Classroom – Principles of Working in the Private Security Industry & Physical Intervention

Day 3 – Classroom – Application of Physical Intervention Techniques & Protective Skills

Day 4 – Classroom – Practical Scenario Assessments & Multi-Choice Exams

* You will only need to attend Emergency First Aid at Work training if you are unable to present a valid certificate (within last 12 months)

First Aid Requirement

You must hold a valid First Aid qualification to complete this course.

If your First Aid certificate has expired or is not valid, you must complete First Aid training before starting the Close Protection refresher. This can be booked with us as part of your course package.

Formal exams will take place on the last day of the course for which you will need to present your ID documents on each occasion.

Certification and Licence Renewal

Upon successful completion, you will receive the Level 2 Award for Close Protection Operatives in the Private Security Industry (Refresher).

This qualification allows you to apply to renew your Close Protection SIA licence.
